Mossman Gorge: The Complete Visitor Guide

Mossman Gorge: The Complete Visitor Guide

Mossman Gorge is the most accessible part of the Daintree Rainforest. Clear water runs over huge granite boulders, the rainforest closes in overhead, and the whole place is only about 20 minutes' drive from Port Douglas. It's on almost every first-timer's list, and it's worth it.

Where is Mossman Gorge?

The gorge sits just west of the town of Mossman, in the southern section of Daintree National Park. Allow about 20 minutes from Port Douglas, 45 minutes from Palm Cove and around 1 hour 15 minutes from Cairns.

The shuttle bus (you can't drive to the gorge)

Private cars stop at the Mossman Gorge Centre, run by the local Kuku Yalanji community. From there a shuttle bus runs the last couple of kilometres to the gorge every few minutes during opening hours. There's a small fare for the shuttle. It helps fund the community, and it keeps traffic out of the rainforest.

Good to know: the last shuttles back run in the late afternoon, so don't leave your visit too late in the day. Check the current timetable before you go.

The best walks

  • Baral Marrjanga boardwalk. An easy, flat boardwalk from the shuttle stop to a lookout over the river. Suitable for prams and most mobility levels.
  • Rex Creek swing bridge. A suspension bridge over the creek, and a favourite photo spot.
  • Rainforest Circuit Track. A loop of roughly 2.4 km through the forest. Allow about an hour at an easy pace. It's well signposted but can be slippery after rain.

Can you swim at Mossman Gorge?

Yes. The calm pools near the main viewing area are the usual swimming spot, and the water is cool and clear. But the river can be dangerous. Currents under the boulders are strong, especially after rain, and people have drowned here. Swim only where it's calm, never after heavy rain, and follow the signs and any closures.

Ngadiku Dreamtime Walks

For real context on the place, book a guided Dreamtime Walk with a Kuku Yalanji guide from the Gorge Centre. It usually starts with a smoking ceremony, then covers bush foods, traditional medicine and the stories of the land. It's one of the best cultural experiences in Far North Queensland.

How long do you need?

Allow 2–3 hours for the walks and a swim, or a half day if you add a Dreamtime Walk and lunch at the centre café. Mossman Gorge also pairs well with a Daintree River cruise or a trip up to Cape Tribulation on the same day.

Tips for visiting

  • Go early. The car park and pools are busiest from late morning.
  • Bring insect repellent, water shoes and a towel.
  • Don't stack rocks, take plants or leave rubbish. This is a sacred site for the Kuku Yalanji people.
