Port Douglas is one of Australia's easiest family holiday spots. It's compact and walkable, the beaches are safe in the stinger nets, and the reef and rainforest are close by. Here's how to make the most of it with kids.
Family favourites
- Four Mile Beach. Swim between the flags and inside the stinger net in season. Early morning is best for little ones.
- Wildlife Habitat. Walk among kangaroos and see crocodiles, cassowaries and koalas up close.
- Low Isles. A small coral cay with calm, shallow snorkelling straight off the beach, and often turtles. Ideal for first-time snorkellers.
- Mossman Gorge. The boardwalk is pram-friendly, and kids love the swing bridge. Supervise closely near the water. See our Mossman Gorge guide.
- Daintree River cruise. Crocs from the safety of a boat are always a hit. See the cruise guide.
- Hartley's Crocodile Adventures. Croc feeding shows and a lagoon cruise. See our Hartley's guide.
- Sunday markets. Fresh juice, food and local stalls in Anzac Park by the water.
Safety tips
- Apply sunscreen all day, every day, even on cloudy days.
- Kids should swim only in patrolled, netted areas, and wear stinger suits on reef trips.
- Teach kids to stay well back from creeks, rivers and estuaries. Crocodiles live throughout the region.
- Bring hats, water bottles and insect repellent for rainforest days.
The airport transfer with kids
After a flight, a long wait for a shuttle with tired kids is no fun. On a private transfer the vehicle is yours, the driver meets you at arrivals, and infant capsules, child seats and boosters are free. Add your children's ages and weights when you book so the right seats are fitted before pickup. Our vans take up to 7 passengers with luggage.
